Attending a party where alcohol is served

Question:

My department at the university will be hosting a graduation party during which they will serve alcohol. Is it permissable to attend this party?

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah.

It is narrated in Sunan at-Tirmidhi with an authentic chain by Jabir that the Prophet alayhi as salaam said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let not him or her sit at a gathering where intoxicants are being served.”

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Allaah will ask His slave on the Day of Resurrection until He says: What prevented you, when you saw something evil, from denouncing it?'” According to another report: “One of you will be asked on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked: What prevented you from denouncing evil when you saw it?” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad and Ibn Maajah, 4017; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1818).

Attending such gatherings will cause one’s heart to die. It is best if you turn this into an opportunity to give dawah to your colleagues and teach them alittle about Islam.

Allah knows best.
