In the name of Allah The Compassionate The Loving.
Nasal Letters (ن م)
Salam alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa BarakatuHu. Peace be upon the followers of guidance.

In this lesson we will go over the nasal letters (khaishoom).

nasal

The ulema from before us taught us about the sounds that emits from the nasal. This is the far inner part of the nose. This sound is called "ghunna".
There are 2 nasal letters:

1. ن (nun).
2. م (meem).

They are pronounced from the nasal when the ن (nun) and م (meem) have a sakoon. This is the case when they are idhar (clear) or ikhfaa (hidden) or itgham bi ghunna (assimilation with nasalization). When they have a shaddah (نّ مّ) it moves from the original emission point to the nasal.

ن

The ن (nun) is a letter that is pronounced from the nasal (khaishoom). This is also the case with tanween ( like بً بٍ بٌ).

Listen to the ن in the following ayat from surah Kauthar:

{إِنَّآ أَعۡطَيۡنَـٰكَ ٱلۡكَوۡثَرَ}

Try this exercise to feel the ghunnah:
1. Say "innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnna", continuing the "nnnn" sound for 10 seconds.

2. Plug your nose say "innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnna".

3. Say "innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnna", continuing the "nnnn" sound for 10 seconds, however plug your nose in the middle after 5 seconds.

Were you able to pronounce the "nnnnnn" sound? This "nnnnn" emits from the nasal and is called "ghunna".

There is more of a ghunaah present in situations than others. There are several levels of ghunna. Allah willing we will go over the levels of ghunna after covering the rules of nun sakinah and tanween.

In the case above where the ن (nun) has a shaddah ( نّ ) the sound moves from the nasal to the original emission point of the ن (nun) of the tip of the tongue like in ( اِنَّ ).

Thanks to Allah for the knowledge reaching us from our predecessor ulema. We pray that Allah reward them immensely, and allow us to continue to propogate this beneficial knowledge, and stick to the pure recitation of our noble predecessors. We pray that Allah have mercy and reward the contemporary learners of this virtuous knowledge. We pray that Allah have mercy the future learners of this virtuous knowledge, and that Allah teach them and grant them the full understanding. Amin.

Here are some more examples of ن (nun) with ghunnah:

{إِنَّ قَـٰرُونَ ڪَانَ مِن قَوۡمِ مُوسَى}

{وَوَضَعۡنَا عَنكَ وِزۡرَكَ}

{كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ}

{مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ}

{إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَنۡ أَنذِرۡ}

م

The م (meem) is a letter that is pronounced from the nasal (khaishoom). This is also the case of iqlab, where the ن (nun) sakinah and tanween is changed to a م (meem).

Listen to the م (meem) in the following ayat from surah nabaa:

{عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ}

Try this exercise to feel the ghunnah:
1. Say "ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmma", continuing the "mmmm" sound for 10 seconds.

2. Plug your nose say "ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmma".

3. Say "ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmma", continuing the "mmm" sound for 10 seconds, however plug your nose in the middle after 5 seconds.

Were you able to pronounce the "mmmmmmmmm" sound? This "mmmm" emits from the nasal and is called "ghunna".

There is more of a ghunaah present in situations than others. There are several levels of ghunna. Allah willing we will go over the levels of ghunna after covering the rules of meem sakinah.

In the case above where the م (meem) has a shaddah ( مّ ) the sound moves from the nasal to the original emission point of the م (meem) of the lips like in ( ثُمَّ ).

Here are some more examples of م (meem) with ghunnah:

{ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ}

{صِرَٲطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ}

{عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ}

{حمٓ}

{فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أَعۡطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ}

The ن (nun) and م (meem) with ghunnah are pronounced from the nasal, and may peace and blessings be upon prophet Muhammed.
