In the name of Allah The Compassionate The Loving.
Tip Tongue Letters 2 (ت ط د).
Salam alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa BarakatuHu. Peace be upon the followers of guidance.

In this lesson we will go over the letters of the tip tongue part 2 (tarfal Lisan).

tip of the tongue

The letters of the tongue are divided into four sections:

1. The far tongue (aqsal lisan) .
2. The middle tongue (wasatal lisan)
3. The side tongue (Hafatul lisan)
4. The tip of the tongue (tarful lisan)

The tip tongue (tarfal lisan) has 11 letters that emit from it. Incha Allah we will go over it in four parts. :

1. part 1 ن (nun) and ر (raw).
2. part 2 ت (ta) ط (taw) and د (dal).
3. part 3 ث (tha) ذ (dhal) and ظ (dhaw)
4. part 4 س (seen) ص (sawd) ز (za)

In this lesson, we go over part 2 ت (ta) ط (taw) and د (dal). The د (dal), the ت (ta), and the ط (taw) are emitted from the tip of the tongue at the roots of the top central incisor (front) teeth.

ت

The ت (ta) has the same sound as ط (taw) except that it is pronounced thin. The ت (ta) is a thin letter (Muraqaqa) and pronounced similar to the ط (taw) which is a thick letter (mufakhama). When pronouncing thin (muraqaqa) letters like ت (ta) keep the side of the mouth apart. The thick letters have a "o" sound, and the thin letters have an "a" sound. ت (ta) sounds sort of like "taffy". ط (taw) sounds sort of like "tough".

Listen to the following ayats from surah lail paying attention to ت (ta) and ط (taw):

{إِنَّ سَعۡيَكُمۡ لَشَتَّىٰ}

{فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أَعۡطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ}

The ت in لَشَتَّىٰ is pronounced thin with an a sound like "taa". The ط in أَعۡطَىٰ is pronounced thick like "taw". The thin letters have an "a" sound and the thick letters have a "o" sound. Also in the second ayat, pronounce the ت in وَٱتَّقَىٰ thin though it is surrounded by thick letters.

When reciting the Quran, it is very important to pronounce the ت (ta) and the ط (taw) the right way, otherwise the meaning would change. For example:

تِين which means "fig", and
طِين which means "clay" .

It is good to practice, and recite to a shaikh so that one will become used to pronouncing the ت (ta) and ط (taw) correctly. After a while, you will get used to it, and pronounce it correctly without even thinking about it.

The ت (ta) when it has a sakoon on it (تْ) is pronounced with hums (اَلْهَمْس) . The letters of hums (اَلْهَمْس) are:
فحثه شخص سكت

The letters of (اَلْهَمْس) are pronounced with air coming out of the mouth. If you put your hand in front of your mouth, you would feel some air come out as you pronounce it.

Listen to the following ayats, paying attention to the ت at the end:

{فَلۡيَعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَيۡتِ}

{لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتۡ وَعَلَيۡہَا مَا ٱكۡتَسَبَتۡ‌}

Did you notice how the ت (ta) was pronounced at the end? You do not hear the sound of qalqala like in the ط (taw). Allah willing, in a future lesson we will explain more about qalqala.

Note that in these ayats, the endings had the open ت . Sometimes you find the ending having the closed ة , where the pronounciation changes to a ه like in the following ayats:

{وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ}

{ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ}

Here are some more examples of ت (ta):

{إِيَّاكَ نَعۡبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسۡتَعِينُ}

{ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٲطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ}

{وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ۬ شَرًّ۬ا يَرَهُۥ}

{عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ}

{إِذَا جَآءَ نَصۡرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡفَتۡحُ}

{فَٱلۡمُغِيرَٲتِ صُبۡحً۬ا}

{وَلَلۡأَخِرَةُ خَيۡرٌ۬ لَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ}

{مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ}

ط

The ط (taw) looks like the ص , but has a "sail" standing on top of it. The ط (taw) has the same sound as ت (ta) except that it is pronounced thick. The ط (taw) is a thick letter (Mufakhama) and pronounced similar to the ت (ta) which is a thin letter (muraqaqa). When pronouncing thick letters (Mufakhama) letters like ط (taw) keep the side of the mouth close together. The thick letters have a "o" sound, and the thin letters have an "a" sound. ط (taw) sounds sort of like "tough". ت (ta) sounds sort of like "taffy".

Listen to the following ayat paying attention to ط (taw) and ت (ta):

{ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٲطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ}

Did you hear a difference between the ط in ٱلصِّرَٲطَ and the ت in ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ ? The ط in ٱلصِّرَٲطَ is pronounced thick like "taw". The ت in ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ is pronounced thin with an a sound like "taa". The thick letters have an "o" sound and the thin letters have a "a" sound. The thick letters are :
خص ضغط قظ

When reciting the Quran, it is very important to pronounce the ط (taw) and the ت (ta) the right way, otherwise the meaning would change. For example:

طَبَعَ which means "imprint", and
تَبَعَ which means "follow" .

It is good to practice, and recite to a shaikh so that one will become used to pronouncing the ت (ta) and ط (taw) correctly. After a while, you will get used to it, and pronounce it correctly without even thinking about it.

The ط when it has a sakoon on it (طْ) is pronounced with qalqala. It sounds like there is a shadda, like there are two Taws, the first with sakoon, and the second with fatha (طْطَ), however the the second with fatha is not pronounced as long.

Listen to the following ayat, paying attention to the ط :

{كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ}

Did you notice how the ط was pronounced? It sounds as if you are pronouncing it twice, called qalqala. Allah willing, in a future lesson we will explain more about qalqala. The ط is a "strong" letter, meaning that it is not easy to extend the length of time in pronouncing it.

Here are some more examples of ط (taw):

{صِرَٲطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ}

{ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٲطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ}

(أَعُوذُ بالله مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ)

{كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ}

د
The د (dal), like the ت (ta) ط (taw) are emitted from the tip of the tongue at the roots of the top central incisor (front) teeth.

The د when it has a sakoon on it (دْ) is pronounced with qalqala. It sounds like there is a shadda, like there are two dals, the first with sakoon, and the second with fatha (دْدَ), however the the second with fatha is not pronounced as long.

Listen to the following ayat, paying attention to the د :

{قُلۡ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ}

Did you notice how the د was pronounced? It sounds as if you are pronouncing it twice, called qalqala. Allah willing, in a future lesson we will explain more about qalqala. The د is a "strong" letter, meaning that it is not easy to extend the length of time in pronouncing it.

Here are some more examples of د (dal):

{ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ}

{مَـٰلِكِ يَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ}

{إِيَّاكَ نَعۡبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسۡتَعِينُ }

{ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٲطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ}

{وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ}

{وَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُ ۥ ڪُفُوًا أَحَدٌ}

{وَرَأَيۡتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدۡخُلُونَ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفۡوَاجً۬ا}

{خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيہَآ أَبَدًا}

{يَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ ۥۤ أَخۡلَدَهُ}

The ت (ta) ط (taw) and د (dal) are letters that are pronounced from the tip of the tongue, and may peace and blessings be upon prophet Muhammed.
